On Friday, February 7th at 5:00 PM, the Jaffrey Civic Center will present the fifth program in this season’s “Stories to Share” series. The speaker will be longtime woodworker Paul Tuller, who will offer a talk entitled “Japanese House in New Hampshire, a Long Journey”.

In 1987, the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center erected a Japanese timber frame as part of a summer of events focusing on Japanese culture. Paul Tuller was part of that raising. Sixteen years later, Paul bought the pieces of that timber frame and began building the Japanese House on his property in Dublin, New Hampshire.
After retiring from his contracting business in 2017, Paul continued to work on the house. The house was completed in 2019, after fifteen years of building. The house features custom tatami mats, elm flooring, a kotatsu table, a tokonoma, and storm, shoji, and fusuma doors. It also has sitka spruce floor panels, a glass sliding window and an entry roof and porch.
In 2020 a garden and water feature were designed for the area around the house. Excavation began in 2021, and work has been continuing since then to create a tranquil garden and pond that complement the Japanese House.
