Vehicular access restriction in effect starting April 1, 2021
Montague, MA – March 17, 2021 – Effective April 1, the U.S.G.S. S.O. Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center’s security gate in the Patch section of Turners Falls will begin to be locked again at night. The gate is at Migratory Way, just south of the intersection of 15th and G Streets. Existing parking at 15th and G Streets will still be available outside the gate, and non-vehicular access will remain unchanged.
“Restricting vehicular access at night has unfortunately become a necessary environmental protection and public safety measure,” said FirstLight spokesperson Carter Wall. “FirstLight warmly welcomes community members and visitors to continue their daytime enjoyment of this popular recreation spot on the canal, and of course the whole area remains available to pedestrians and bicyclists at all times. We are taking this step to protect visitors and to protect the beautiful natural areas along the river. Our thanks to Chief Williams and the Montague Police Department for their ongoing support of public safety in this area. ”
Beginning April 1, the gate will close automatically at 8:30 p.m. and re-open at 6:00 a.m. every morning. Beginning October 1, with earlier nightfall, the gate will close at 5:30 p.m. and re-open at 6:00 a.m. As in the past, following snow events the gate may open later to accommodate plowing. For questions, please contact FirstLight at 413/659-3714.
